Project overview
We needed to collaborate with our long-time partner Nick Patel at ESS-LLC to add 250KWh of battery backup power to the solar system of a mansion in the Bahamas that belongs to a former NFL football/ American television host.
The solar panels had already been installed; we needed to install the battery system, and adapt it and the battery management system (BMS) to the six solar inverters and help program them.
The challenge of project
The two challenges of the project are:
- Designing a modular Lithium battery system to work with the ESS's and the customer's requirements. We opted for building 48v modules and a modular battery management system, so that the batteries could be best protected from the environment, temperature, moisture, people and other stuff in the garage, and be hot swappable should replacement be necessary.
- It's the Bahamas. Anytime you import hazardous good like Lithium batteries, you have a bunch of paperwork and some official accommodations to meet.

We created 48v Lithium battery units, each with its own part of the modular BMS. We chose EMUS for the BMS and CATL 280Ah LiFePO4 cells. The sealed units have standard pressure vents, fuses, temperature sensors, and handles for safe lifting/moving. We wish the racking was a little shorter, or that we had two more battery units to perfectly fill the space.
>48v modular Lithium batteries, each containing a BMS unit and 16pcs 280Ah LiFePO4 cells
>250KWh of on-demand power
>Modular EMUS battery management system with cell balancing
Final results
It was a beautiful home and solid renewable energy installation that should last a decade or two.
