Food Services

Project overview

This one is a little special. A friend contracted us to build prototype battery products for his food services products (a chafer pan and a proofer cabinet). After delivering all products, we offered to re-engineer the systems in the cabinet and chafer. He and his business partner declined, citing patents already filed and that they had moved on from the development stage; totally fine. But then went further and said thier design was the best possible design; that the partner was a super genius and that no one could make a better system... Obviously we couldn't leave that alone.

The challenge of project

The cabinet only has a control box to work with for space. We needed to fit Peltier chips, fans, waterblocks, radiators, fuses, 24v DC power supply, relays, plumbing, battery management, temp sensors and controllers, switches, and more, in that box. A chafer unit is basically a shallow water pan and so to work with that we needed to create our own integrated box to fit under the unit and between its support legs. This required valved hoses to connect between our box and the pan for circulating water, and an external battery for uses where 120v AC power is not available.

Our systems turned out smaller, lighter, and came out 60% cheaper to manufacture. Rather than using all digital components, we opted for analog internals and digital displays. This greatly reduced our power consumption and we we able to match the same runtimes as our friend, using much smaller batteries.

>Our food service units can chill food down to 40F or heat food up to 170F, with the flip of a switch

>Units can run off 120v AC power and 24v DC. The cabinet has a battery integrated and auto switches to battery power when the unit is turned on, but unplugged from the wall.

>Waterproof, aluminum, and stainless steel construction

>Intuitive and maintainence free

Final results

They ultimately declined to consider or review our work. We would have given it to our friend for free. We created these out of pride and not competition, so we moved on.
