Project overview
Leah contracted with us to design an electric blanket that could save the lives of newborn baby calves. Everything needed to be created new.
The challenge of project
These baby calves are being born in the frigid winter among massive herds, in the great white north. They often freeze to death before a rancher can find them, and even if found alive, maybe at night, the rancher still needs to collect them and warm in his truck, or bring them back to warming huts, or something. These newborns are wet, muddy and likely bloody, and in some shock.

Our blanket solution needed to be waterproof outside, insulated in the middle, and moisture wicking on the inside. It needs to strap securely around the calf. It needs the batteries to be light, compact, with a rugged case, state of charge display, modular battery management, temperature sensing and control (we don't want to cook the calf!), and graphene heater sheets positioned to best warm the animal. Finally everything needs to be removable, washable, and replaceable. The rancher need to be able to find a new calf, strap on a heating blanket, and search for the next calf. Later he/she can collect the happy calves in the morning.
>Internal temp sensing and management
>Battery options for 4hr and 8hr runtimes
>Waterproof, insulated, and moisture wicking materials
>Removeable, washable, replaceable components
>Calf lives are not only saved, but calves are reported stronger and healthier for not wasting initial life energy just to stay warm and alive (This is a cow; not a butterfly...)
Final results
This system is currently being field tested on baby calves in Utah and Montana, and performing exactly as expected. We wrote and co-filed a patent for the system. Maybe next year you will see it in catalogs and in the news!
